Conventional petrol and gas engines burn fuel by igniting a mixture of petrol or gas and air with a spark. Use of incorrect or contaminated petrol, too heavy a load at low engine speeds or insufficient engine cooling can ignite the petrol in the combustion chamber without a spark at the wrong place or too early.
